English has a pre-eminent place in education and in society. A high-quality education in English will teach pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them. Through reading in particular, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Literature, especially, plays a key role in such development. Reading also enables pupils both to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know. All the skills of language are essential to participating fully as a member of society; pupils, therefore, who do not learn to speak, read and write fluently and confidently are effectively disenfranchised.

The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum, and in our school, is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. 
The nation​al curriculum for English aims to ensure that all pupils:
- read easily, fluently and with good understanding;
- develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information;
- acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language;
- appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage;
- write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences;
- use discussion in order to learn, being able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas; and
- are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.
​Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing of the English language by developing learners' phonemic awareness — the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes — in order to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns (graphemes) that represent them.

Read Write Inc provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy. It is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers. As a school 91% of our pupils passed the phonics assessment in 2015.
Literacy and Language is a complete literacy programme for fluent readers - all children in Years 2 to Year 6 read, write and discuss texts with maturity. The programme is totally aligned to the new National Curriculum in a fun and meaningful way.  

Literacy and Language:

Gives every child a deep understanding of what they read using the special 'three reads' approach
Fully prepares every child for writing using a planning, drafting and revising method
Teaches grammar in context so that children can apply it seamlessly in their own writing
Supports the grammar and punctuation aspects of the Key Stage 1 and 2 tests Includes practice tests to build confidence prior to statutory assessment
Creates articulate speakers where children justify their answers and learn how to debate.

Literacy and Language children write confidently and enthusiastically because they have something to say. Teachers report that the impact of Literacy and Language on childrens' learning is huge and the impact has already seen in the pupils' log books by senior leaders.
